Money is a strange Valentine's gift and we will not pretend otherwise. It works in one specific case, and badly in most of the others.

When it works, and when it does not
It works when you are saving for the same thing: a trip, a deposit, a first flat. Putting money towards that is not unromantic, it is the opposite, and a card says so in a way a transfer never could.
It does not work as a substitute for having thought of something. If you are reaching for it because you ran out of time, the card will not rescue it, and they will know.
