Most couples would rather have money than another set of glasses, and most guests know it. What puts people off is how cash arrives: an envelope that can go astray on the day, or a bank transfer that lands looking like a settled invoice.
Send a giftThere is no fixed rule in the UK, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. In practice most guests give somewhere between ยฃ50 and ยฃ100, close family often more, and people travelling a long way or paying for accommodation frequently give less without anybody minding.
Give what is comfortable. The couple will not remember the figure a year later, but they will remember whether the gift felt like it came from you. That is what the card and the message are for.
